Prism Medical UK Provides Support to New Children’s Hospice

Prism Medical has generously donated moving and handling equipment to the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice in Brackenhall, Huddersfield. A donation that was much needed by the hospice as the equipment includes several Freeway TransactiveXtra ceiling track hoists. The hoists will help the parents and carers of the children when moving around and eliminates the need to lift a person manually, therefore reducing the strain on carers' backs and the physical effort required to carry out transfers allowing carers to safely care for children with limited mobility.

The Forget Me Not Children's Hospice provides care and support for children with life-limiting and life threatening conditions from the Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield areas of West Yorkshire. There are currently more than 400 children and families needing the help the hospice has to offer

Prism Medical is part of an international patient handling company and has one of its UK Regional Service Centres at Grange Moor on the outskirts of Huddersfield. Prism manufactures most of its products in the UK at Grange Moor and at its Freeway Division site at Kinmel Bay, North Wales.

Peter Branson, the chief executive of the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice said ‘It was wonderful to receive this offer of help from Prism Medical. It makes a real difference to our children and young people and was a major saving for the hospice. The care that local companies have shown has been remarkable’

In 2010 the charity began supporting children and families through its Hospice at Home service and now support over 35 children and families. The brand new purpose built hospice will gradually be opening its doors to the children and families in 2012. The team are beginning to use the hospice facilities more and more but it will be a staggered process as the hospice increases the number of families they care for, in a way that ensures the service will be sustainable long into the future.

The hospice has cost over £3 million to build and will have an annual running cost of £2.5 million. Less than 4% of the Hospice funding comes from government sources and the remainder from fund raising and donations.
